A charter school is public, free, and open to all Wisconsin residents! Charters operate in a more independent fashion, and provide unique educational opportunities.

Who creates a charter?

A charter school in Wisconsin can be created in two main ways:

1) Via a school district (board initiated)

2) Independent

How many charter schools are in Wisconsin? Is this a new thing?

There are currently (as of August 2025) 222 charter schools in Wisconsin.

Charter schools became legal in Wisconsin in 1993.

Why consider a charter at Houlton?

Houlton has been an educational hub for over a century, serving the local community. It has a history of exceptional educational performance and culture.

With the Hudson school board deciding to close Houlton, due to financial constraints, other avenues are being explored in the hopes that we can maintain this educational gem.
